Softball Starts Florida Trip With Pair Of Run-Rule Victories

CLERMONT, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team opened its 2022 spring break trip with an offensive outburst and a pair of five-inning wins on Sunday morning, defeating Beloit 12-1 and Capital 10-2 at The Spring Games at Hancock Park.

  • The Warriors got on the scoreboard first in the second inning with a Bre Hoy (McHenry, Ill.) solo home run to right center to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • After Beloit tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second, WLC regained the lead after senior Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) scored on a throwing error after stealing third base and freshman Taylor Peterson (Beloit, Wis.) plated sophomore Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) on an infield single to give Wisconsin Lutheran a 3-1 lead.
  • The Green and White broke the game open in the fourth, scoring nine runs on nine hits in the frame. Freshman Faith Ottens (Fulton, Ill.) got the scoring started with a two-run double to left field and eventually came around to score on an RBI single from senior Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.). Martin launched her first home run of the year in the frame. The scoring was capped with a two-RBI single from sophomore Maddy Chestolowski (Appleton, Wis.) and an RBI-single from Ottens.
  • Martin paced the offense in the early game, going 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Chestolowski, Hoy, and Ottens each added multi-hit games for the Warriors.
  • Junior Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) earned her first victory of the season in the circle, allowing just one earned run in 4.0 innings with three strikeouts.

  • The Warriors' offense broke out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. After the first two batters reached base, Martin plated Moberg on a sacrifice fly to right field. Almodovar added a run with an RBI single, and senior Katie Scott (Sallisaw, Okla.) scored two more runs on a sacrifice fly in the opening frame.
  • WLC added a pair of runs in the second inning after Martin and Scott each collected their second RBI of the game.
  • After Capital got on the scoreboard in the top of the third, Wisconsin Lutheran responded with a pair of runs on a two-RBI double from Martin to score both Wilson and Ottens to give the home team a 9-1 lead.
  • Capital scratched another run across in the fifth, but the Green and White answered back with an RBI single from Almodovar to left center to finish the game and give the Warriors a 10-2 victory.
  • WLC's offense recorded 12 hits in the game, led by three hits from freshman Makayla Huff (Galesburg, Ill.). Almodovar, Scott, and Hoy each added a pair of hits. WLC stole six bases as a team, with Wilson and Ottens each swiping a pair. Wilson also scored four runs and Martin drove in five. 
  • Freshman Olivia Plewa (Greenfield, Wis.) improved to 2-0 in the circle for the Warriors, allowing two runs in 5.0 innings with no walks.

  • The Warriors play two games tomorrow at Hancock Park against the University of New England (0-2) and Babson (7-2) at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. CST, respectively.
