Softball Drops Two Heartbreakers In Spring Games Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team concluded its spring break trip at The Spring Games with a pair of tough late-game defeats on Friday morning at Hancock Park. The Warriors lost the opener 12-7 in eight innings to Salve Regina before dropping game two 6-5 to Carroll.

  • Final Scores: Salve Regina 12, Wisconsin Lutheran 7 (8 Inn.); Carroll 6, Wisconsin Lutheran 5
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (7-5), Salve Regina (4-1), Carroll (8-4)
  • Location: Hancock Park, Clermont, Fla.

  • The Seahawks had five straight hitters reach base en route to taking an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Warriors answered quickly and cut the deficit to 3-1 when sophomore Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) doubled home senior Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) who led off the game with a walk.
  • Neither team had a baserunner reach safely until WLC's half of the fourth when Martin walked to start the inning and freshman Makayla Huff (Galesburg, Ill.) had a two-out RBI single up the middle to cut the Salve Regina's lead to 3-2 after four innings.
  • The Green and White took the lead with a three-run fifth inning. Freshman Faith Ottens (Fulton, Ill.) got the offense started with a single and after Wilson reached on an error, freshman Taylor Peterson (Beloit, Wis.) grounded out to tie the game at 3-3. Martin then gave WLC the lead with a two-run home run to left center on a 3-0 count.
  • The Seahawks threatened with a two-out rally in their half of the sixth, but freshman Callie Terrill (Minooka, Ill.) escaped a bases-loaded jam with an infield lineout to keep Wisconsin Lutheran in front 5-3.
  • Salve Regina rallied again in the top of the seventh with another bases-loaded threat and capitalized on a two-out throwing error to score two runs and tie the game at 5-5. The Green and White had a rally of its own in the bottom of the seventh but left the bases loaded to send the game to extra innings thanks to some great defensive plays from SRU.
  • Salve Regina broke the game open in the eighth, scoring seven runs on four hits to take a late 12-5 lead. The Warriors got a pair of runs back in the eighth with RBI groundouts from both Huff and Wilson but left a pair of runners on base to end the game.
  • Martin led the Warriors with two hits, including her fifth home run of the week, and three RBI. Huff added a pair of RBI as well.

  • After a quiet first inning, the Pioneers plated a single tally in the second but left the based loaded.
  • The Warriors responded with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Senior Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a Pios throwing error. WLC plated two more runs on another throwing error. Carroll answered with a three-run inning of its own, tallying four hits, three with two outs, to take a 4-3 lead.
  • Moberg led off the fifth with another walk and scored on an RBI triple to left field by Ottens to tie the game at 4-4. Wisconsin Lutheran took the lead later in the inning on a two-out RBI single from senior Katie Scott (Sallisaw, Okla.) to plate Ottens.
  • The Pioneers rallied quickly with a pair of runs in their half of the fifth as they took a late 6-5 lead through five innings of play.
  • Carroll threatened to break the game open in the sixth, but Terrill came in relief to get the final two outs and strand the bases loaded.
  • The Warriors had the first two batters reach base as Moberg walked and Wilson reached on an error in the seventh but left the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second to conclude the game.
  • Four different Warriors recorded a hit in the game. Moberg reached base three times with three walks.

  • The Warriors return to action next Saturday when they open NACC play with a doubleheader at conference newcomer St. Norbert (0-12, 0-0 NACC). First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Mel Nicks Sports Complex in De Pere. Live coverage links with be available for both games at WLCsports.com.
