Warriors Split On Opening Day In Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Sophomore Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) had three hits and drove in four runs to lead the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team to an opening day split on Saturday at the UW-Oshkosh Rec Plex. The Warriors fell to UW-Superior 10-4, before holding on for a 4-3 win over Ripon in the nightcap.

  • The Warriors answered a Yellowjackets first-inning RBI groundout with a four-spot in the top of the second. 
  • WLC had four runs on three hits by senior Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) and Martin, sandwiched in between a sac fly from freshman Faith Ottens (Fulton, Ill.). Wisconsin Lutheran had a chance for even more, but left the bases loaded as the inning came to an end.
  • UWS erupted for eight runs on six hits in its half of the fourth to take a five-run lead.
  • UW-Superior added one more run to its total in the sixth for the 10-4 final score.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran stranded 10 runners on base and had a baserunner reach in every inning except for the fourth.
  • Sophomore Bre Hoy (McHenry, Ill.) had two hits and a run for the Green and White, while Martin drove in a pair of runs.

  • The Warriors struck first with three runs on three hits in the first inning of game two. Martin singled home a pair of runners in Ottens and Moberg and freshman Makayla Huff (Galesburg, Ill.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Martin.
  • The Red Hawks scored an unearned run in the second inning and added another in the fifth on a RBI triple.
  • WLC got the run back in its half of the fifth when Huff singled home senior Katie Scott (Sallisaw, Okla.) with two outs for a 4-2 lead. 
  • RC closed to within a run in the sixth on a sac fly, but junior Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) retired Ripon in order in the seventh to record the save.
  • Ottens and Martin led Wisconsin Lutheran at the plate with two hits each, while Martin drove in two runs. Huff had the other two RBI in the game for the Green and White.
  • Freshman Olivia Plewa (Greenfield, Wis.) earned her first win in the first start of her career, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing two earned runs.

  • The Warriors will next travel to Clermont, Florida next Saturday where they will play 10 games at The Spring Games. WLC begins its spring break trip against Beloit (0-0) and Capital (0-0) on Sunday, March 13.
