Softball Suffers Home-Opening Sweep To Eagles

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – After multiple postponements and 18 games away from Neumann Family Field, the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team held its home opener on Tuesday afternoon against Edgewood. The Eagles defeated the Warriors in a pair of NACC games by scores of 4-1 and 6-3 on a windy day at Neumann Family Field.

• Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (8-12, 1-7 NACC), Edgewood (13-13, 6-4 NACC)
• Location: Neumann Family Softball Field, Wauwatosa, Wis.

• The Warriors started the opener with back-to-back hits from senior Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) and freshman Faith Ottens (Fulton, Ill.) and a walk drawn by sophomore Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.).
• With two outs in the inning, freshman Makayla Huff (Galesburg, Ill.) broke for second while Ottens broke safely for home for a 1-0 lead after one inning.
• Neither team could manage much offense over the next four frames. WLC threatened in the fifth with runners at the corners and one out, but failed to plate any runs across.
• The Eagles' first three batters reached in the sixth inning as they put together a four-hit, four-run inning to take a 4-1 lead.
• Wisconsin Lutheran threatened again in its last at-bat of the seventh. Sophomore Addison Gelande (Port Byron, Ill.) and freshman Cara Velez (Chicago, Ill.) singled to leadoff the inning, but the Green and White had its last two runners tagged out at third base to end the inning and game. 
• Sophomore Bri Biermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) collected two of the Warriors' seven hits in the game.
• Freshman Callie Terrill (Minooka, Ill.) struck out a season-high six batters in 5.1 innings of work.

• The Eagles scratched across a first-inning run with a two-out RBI single, one of three hits in the frame, for a 1-0 lead. 
• The Warriors stranded a pair of runners on base in both the first and second inning, before tying the game at 1-1 in the fourth. Velez drove home Biermann from third on a RBI groundout for WLC's first run of the game.
• Edgewood loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth and hit a grand slam to give the visitors a 5-1 lead. 
• Wisconsin Lutheran again left multiple runners on base in the fifth and sixth, after the Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a RBI single.
• The Green and White didn't go away quietly in the seventh, as Martin doubled home sophomore Bre Hoy (McHenry, Ill.) and senior Katie Scott's (Sallisaw, Okla.) sac fly to center plated Martin.
• Hoy, Martin, and Biermann each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Senior Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) also added two hits as the Warriors finished with 11 for the game.

• The Warriors next travel to Loves Park, Illinois on Friday for a 1 p.m. NACC doubleheader against Rockford (9-13, 1-9 NACC). Live coverage will be available for both games at WLCSports.com.
