Box Score 2 WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's tennis team bounced back from an 8-1 loss early in the day for an identical 8-1 win over Ripon on Thursday in season-opening action at Hart Park.
"We rebounded nicely from our earlier match," said second-year head coach
Jay Massart. "The momentum from strong doubles matches led to six straight singles wins. It was a good opening day for the team."
Juniors
Katelynn Haskell (Santa Maria, Calif.) and
Jena Smith (Lake Mills, Wis.) earned the Warriors' only win over the Pointers in their early-morning lidlifter. WLC's No. 1 doubles team collected an 8-5 victory. UWSP, which prevailed 8-3 and 8-5 at the remaining two doubles slots, swept through singles play in straight sets.
Wisconsin Lutheran won two of three flights in doubles play over the Red Hawks. Haskell and Smith teammed for an 8-3 victory, while junior
Izzy Hawley (Allen Park, Mich.) and sophomore
Ali Schmidt (Germantown, Wis.) were victorious 8-5.Â
Singles play went the way of the Green and White as they swept all six flights, including four in straight sets. Haskell (6-2, 6-1), Smith (6-1, 6-0), Hawley (6-4, 6-2), Schmidt (4-6, 6-0, 6-2), junior
Sky Pope (Macon, Ga.) (6-1, 6-2), and freshman
Mary Meghrian (Peoria, Ill.) (6-4, 7-6 (7-1) were all winners against Ripon.
The Warriors (1-1) host Calvin (0-0) next Friday, September 9 in non-conference action at Hart Park. First serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
