WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Senior
Jason Cano (Delavan, Wis.) became Wisconsin Lutheran College's all-time leader in goals scored on Wednesday in a 5-0 shutout win over Marian in the NACC opener at Warriors Soccer Field.
"I thought our team played with great energy," said 23rd-year head coach
Joe Luedke. "Marian is a really well-coached team so I am happy with the amount of goal scoring chances we created. Winning games in our conference is difficult and we got the job done tonight. I am thrilled for Jason and for our soccer program as a whole. A record-breaking night and I could not be happier for him. He is a true goal scorer and a special soccer player. On top of that he is a kind and humble person. This was truly a memorable night for everyone involved with our program both past and present!"
The Warriors (4-1-0, 1-0-0 NACC) took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when junior
Ben Meaux (Franklin, Wis.) scored his second goal of the season off a free kick from Cano.Â
In the 36th minute, Cano gave WLC a 2-0 lead when he scored his 48th career goal and sixth of the season, becoming the program's all-time scoring leader, off a pass from senior
KJ McNealey Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis.). Wisconsin Lutheran, which out-shot the Sabres (2-4-0, 0-1-0 NACC) 7-3 in the first half, led 2-0 at intermission.
Senior
Joel Migliaccio (Muskego, Wis.) extended the Warriors' lead to 3-0 in the 58th minute when he lobbed the ball over the Marian keeper following an assist from senior
Josh Sepic (Mukwonago, Wis.) for his first goal of the year.
Senior
Joseph Raasch (Germantown, Wis.) netted WLC's last two goals in the 66th and 74th minute, aided by Cano and freshman
Cameron Jochimsen (Freedom, Wis.).Â
Wisconsin Lutheran out-shot Marian 18-14 and held a 6-3 margin in corner kicks. The Warriors received four shots each from Cano, Meaux, and Raasch.Â
Sophomore
Bryce Beckley (Waterford, Wis.) and junior
Puma Galvan (Racine, Wis.) shared halves in goal and combined for a shutout with five saves.
