WLC Reels In Muskies To Claim NACC Opener

Patchett, Wigley lead Warriors' offensive attack

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College opened its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule on Wednesday night with a 3-1 win over Lakeland inside the Time of Grace Center.

"I was proud of our team win and the way they trusted each other tonight to open conference play," said sixth-year head coach Jenilee Voss. "We especially showed good resolve after a rocky third set to get the job done in four behind a great home crowd."

The Warriors (3-4, 1-0 NACC), who won their third straight match, defeated the Muskies (4-5, 0-1 NACC) by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 14-25, 25-20.

WLC erased an 11-9 deficit in the first set with a four-point rally to take a lead that it wouldn't relinquish. Wisconsin Lutheran used a 6-1 scoring run to break away from a 16-15 lead behind a trio of kills from senior Jenna Charron (Appleton, Wis.). The Warriors won the opening set 25-19.

LU scored the first two points of the second set, but it would be its only lead, as a 5-1 run by WLC gave itself the lead for good. A kill from sophomore Amahra Matthai (Plover, Wis.) put the Warriors ahead 18-14 and the hosts scored four of the final five points for a 25-20 set two victory.

Lakeland turned a 6-3 deficit into an 11-6 lead in the third set. WLC came within five points at 19-14 on a kill by freshman Kayla Wigley (Milwaukee, Wis.), but the Muskies scored the final six points of the set for the 25-14 win.

Wisconsin Lutheran scored the first five points of the fourth set, and after LU was able to even the score at 16 apiece, the Warriors scored five of the next six to take control. WLC closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.

Wisconsin Lutheran hit .219 behind 46 kills against 21 errors in 114 attempts. Freshman Cassie Patchett (Appleton, Wis.) paced the Warriors with 11 kills, while Kayla Wigley added 10. Senior Emily Sarles (Lombard, Ill.) collected 20 assists and sophomore Emma Incaprero (Mauston, Wis.) contributed 17. Junior Elise Meier (Watertown, Wis.) served up four aces. Sophomore Kylee Gnabasik (Jefferson, Wis.) led the team with 10 digs.

Lakeland hit .097 with 34 kills and 23 errors in 113 attempts. Susana Stevens led the Muskies with nine kills.

WLC travels to De Pere next Tuesday for a 7 p.m. NACC match against St. Norbert (4-5, 1-0 NACC). Live coverage links will be available for the contest at WLCSports.com.
