Michaelis, Bullpen Lead Wisconsin Lutheran To First Win

Three relievers combine for five shutout innings

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) - Three relievers combined for five shutout innings and freshman Eli Michaelis (Wauwatosa, Wis.) had two hits and two RBI to lead Wisconsin Lutheran College to a 5-1 win over Defiance on Thursday at Terry Park.

The Yellow Jackets (1-8) jumped on the board in the top of the first inning with a one-out RBI single for the early lead. After escaping a bases-loaded jam in the second, the Warriors (1-5) scored three runs in their half of the inning. Three straight batters reached base with two outs, as Michaelis and freshman Kason McFadden (Sachse, Texas) had consecutive RBI singles for the 3-1 lead.

WLC pitchers worked out of scoreless jams all afternoon, leaving 15 DC runners on base, including the bases loaded in the third and seventh innings. Wisconsin Lutheran added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, as junior Henry Strupp's (Watertown, Wis.) squeeze bunt brought home sophomore Tyler Danko (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Michaelis' one-out single scored freshman Tim Frerking (Oconomowoc, Wis.).

Senior Hunter Martin (Whitewater, Wis.) pitched a pair of three-up, three-down innings in the eighth and ninth as the Warriors brought home their first win.

Michaelis finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while McFadden drove in a pair on one hit. Sophomore Will Tucholski (Geneva, Ill.) earned the win after tossing 2.0 scoreless relief innings. Freshman Caiden Treske (Grafton, Wis.) also tossed a scoreless frame.

WLC wraps up its week in Florida tomorrow with a single game against UW-Stout (5-1) at 9 a.m. ET at Terry Park.
