WLC Starts NACC Play Against No. 20 CUW

Martin homers for fourth time this year

MEQUON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College opened its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule on Sunday against No. 20 Concordia Wisconsin at Catalyst Park. The Falcons defeated the Warriors by scores of 6-1 and 9-1 in five innings.

WLC (5-9, 0-2 NACC), which returned to the diamond for the first time in 16 days, left a pair of two-out runners stranded on base in the top of the first inning. A one-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning gave CUW (13-3, 2-0 NACC) a 2-0 lead.

Junior Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) leadoff the fourth inning with her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right field, trimming the deficit to 2-1. Concordia Wisconsin answered with three runs in its half of the fourth, including two unearned, for a 5-1 lead. The Falcons scored their final run in the fifth on a solo home run to center for the 6-1 final.

Martin and junior Addison Gelande (Port Byron, Ill.) tallied Wisconsin Lutheran's two hits in the opener.

CUW netted a first-inning run on an infield single for a 1-0 lead in the nightcap. Concordia Wisconsin put up seven runs on eight hits in the second inning to take control of the contest.

The Warriors got on the board in the fourth inning. After Martin's one-out triple to left field, sophomore Gwen Malecke (Gilberts, Ill.) followed with a sac fly to left. The Falcons finished the game in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single to left for the 9-1 win.

Martin and freshman Emily Cardenas (Lake Stevens, Wash.) collected WLC's two hits in the game.

Wisconsin Lutheran is scheduled to host Dominican (11-3, 0-0 NACC) on Tuesday at 3 p.m. for its home-opening NACC doubleheader. Live coverage links will be available at WLCSports.com.
