Ashley Corley (Plainfield, Ill.) and
Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) recorded five hits apiece to lead Wisconsin Lutheran College to a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep of Alverno on Wednesday at Alverno Field. The Warriors defeated the Inferno by scores of 4-3 and 16-5 in five innings.
After stranding a pair of runners on base in both the first and third innings, WLC (11-23, 4-14 NACC) scratched across a run in the fourth on junior
Briana Vilches' (Fontana, Calif.) two-out single that scored freshman pinch runner
Juliana Sieber (Oconto, Wis.).
AC (4-29, 1-20 NACC) answered with a two-run fifth inning on a leadoff homerun and a two-out RBI single for a 2-1 lead.
In the seventh, five straight Wisconsin Lutheran batters reached base with one out, including back-to-back RBI singles from Corley and sophomore
Makayla Huff (Galesburg, Ill.). Corley later crossed the plate on a throwing error for a 4-2 advantage.
Alverno leadoff the seventh with a home run but left the tying run on second when sophomore
Callie Terrill (Minooka, Ill.) fanned her 10th batter of the game for the final out.
Martin led the Warriors at the plate by going 2-for-2 with two walks. Terrill tossed her first complete game of the season with a career-high 10 strikeouts for her third win of the year.
WLC collected a pair of first-inning runs in game two behind a Martin RBI single and a Corley RBI double for a 2-0 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran added six runs, all unearned, on six hits in the second inning. A RBI single from Corley and back-to-back RBI doubles from Huff and junior
Maddy Chestolowski (Appleton, Wis.) highlighted the six-run frame.
The Inferno plated a trio of runs in the second inning on five hits to trim the deficit to 8-3. The Warriors got those three runs back in the fourth on RBI doubles from Corley and Chestolowski in between a RBI single from Huff.
A two-out, two-run home run in the fourth inning gave Alverno its fourth and fifth runs of the game.
WLC added its final five runs on six hits in the fifth inning. A two-run triple from Martin and RBI singles from Corley and Chestolowski aided in the five-run frame.Â
Corley went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored to lead Wisconsin Lutheran. Martin, Huff, and Chestolowski added three hits and three RBI, while Martin scored four runs and Huff scored twice. Freshman
Emily Brands (Zeeland, Mich.) won her first game of the season in the circle after pitching 3.0 innings and allowing three runs.
