RIVER FOREST, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College put an end to its five-match losing streak with a 3-1 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win over Concordia Chicago on Wednesday at Geiseman Gymnasium.
The Warriors (2-6, 1-0 NACC), who won their conference-opening match for the sixth straight season, defeated the Cougars (3-3, 0-1 NACC) in four sets by scores of 21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-23.Â
WLC trailed the entire first set, including by as many as 10 points at 19-9. In a second set that featured 10 ties and six lead changes, Wisconsin Lutheran rattled off the final five points to overcome a 21-20 deficit. The Warriors led from start to finish in the third set, including by as many as nine points on three occasions. A back-and-forth fourth set saw nine ties and six lead changes before a late five-point run pushed WLC over the top for a conference-opening win.
Sophomore
Kayla Wigley (Milwaukee, Wis.) matched a career high with 18 kills while hitting .378 to lead Wisconsin Lutheran. Sophomore
Bailey Halliburton (Germantown, Wis.) also tied a career high with 10 kills and hit .333. Juniors
Emma Incaprero (Mauston, Wis.) and
Karah Valerio (Pewaukee, Wis.) tallied 19 and 16 assists, respectively.Â
Junior
Kylee Gnabasik (Jefferson, Wis.) collected a match-high 19 digs and served up a trio of aces. Freshman
Margie Stevens (Oneida, Wis.) and junior
Grace Frey (South Milwaukee, Wis.) each recorded five block assists. Stevens also added three service aces.
The Warriors, who had a season-high 14 block assists, hit .175 for the match on 48 kills, 24 errors, and 137 attempts.
WLC travels to Ripon on Friday and Saturday for the Red Hawks Invitational. Wisconsin Lutheran takes on Maranatha Baptist (4-1) and Nebraska Wesleyan (5-3)Â in Friday's first two contests. Live coverage links will be available at WLCSports.com.
