RIPON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College secured its first 9-0 sweep of the season over host Ripon, before being edged 5-4 by Wartburg on Saturday in non-conference action at the Willmore Center.
The Warriors (2-7) swept through doubles play against the Red Hawks (0-9), as WLC's No. 1 team of junior
Aidan Newberg (Manitowoc, Wis.) and sophomore
Zadic Torline (Shawnee, Kan.) defeated RC's Ty Rondestvedt and Caleb Sippel, 8-3. Seniors
Jon Kannenberg (Butler, Wis.) and
Bryce Halvorsen (Kewaskum, Wis.) took down Jack Ives and Corey Mooney, 8-2. Sophomore
Connor Heezen (Pulaski, Wis.) and freshman
Cameron Borchert (Loveland, Colo.) won by default at No. 3.Â
In singles competition, Newberg (2-6, 6-2, 10-7) and Torline (1-6, 6-4, 13-11) each tallied three-set tiebreaking wins at No. 1 and No. 2 over Sippel and Rondestvedt, respectively. Kannenberg collected a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 over Mooney, Halvorsen was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Ives at No. 4, Heezen won by retirement 6-0, 3-1 at No. 5, and Borchert was a default winner at No. 6. Â
The Knights (2-4) took a pair of 8-4 decisions over Wisconsin Lutheran's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles tandems in the nightcap. At No. 1, Newberg and Torline teamed for an 8-5 victory over Ola Palmertz and Ashley Stapley.Â
Newberg (6-3, 3-6, 10-8), Kannenberg (4-6, 6-4, 10-3), and Halvrosen (5-7, 6-4, 10-8) pocketed three-set tiebreaking wins at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 singles, respectively. Heezen came up just short in another three-set match, 6-4, 1-6, 10-3, at No. 5. Wartburg won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 5 singles.
Wisconsin Lutheran next plays a pair of exhibition matches against McHenry County (Feb. 25) and Prairie State (March 2) at Pleasant Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.
