MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College opened its 2024 spring season schedule with a pair of non-conference dual losses to Cornell, 7-2, and Northwestern, 9-0, at Small Sport Center Arena.
The Warriors (1-4) suffered three close losses in doubles play against the Rams (1-1) in the opener. WLC's No. 1 team of senior
Asa White (Farmington, N.M.) and junior
Aidan Newberg (Manitowoc, Wis.), and the No. 3 team of senior
Jon Kannenberg (Butler, Wis.) and sophomore
Connor Heezen (Pulaski, Wis.) were both dealt heartbreaking 8-7 (7-5) losses. Senior
Bryce Halvorsen (Kewaskum, Wis.) and sophomore
Zadic Torline (Shawnee, Kan.) came up short 8-5 at No. 2. In singles play, Newberg notched a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 2 over Federico Polidori, while Heezen handled Edwin Holyoake 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6. CC collected straight set victories at the remaining flights.
The Red Raiders (2-3) took all three doubles contests from Wisconsin Lutheran in the nightcap by scores of 8-0, 8-0, 8-3. Newberg battled David Bomgaars to a third-set tiebreak at No. 2 singles, but fell 3-6, 6-2, 10-4. NC recorded straight set victories at the remaining singles positions.
The Warriors travel to Elgin, Illinois one week from today to take on Judson (0-0). First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Judson Tennis Courts.
