Baseball Drops Gene Cusic Opener To Anchormen

Shevey records three hits to lead Warriors

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College couldn't recover from an early deficit against Rhode Island in a 9-4 defeat on Sunday in its first game of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at Terry Park.

The Anchomen (2-2) homered in the top of the first to gain an early 1-0 advantage. They tacked on a pair of runs in the second and fourth innings, and a single run in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead.

A RBI single in the bottom of the sixth by junior Nolan Hodgins (Caledonia, Wis.) gave the Warriors their first run of the day. RIC plated a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but WLC answered back with a run. Freshman Aiden Montgomery (St. Louis, Mo.) hit a sac fly to center, which scored sophomore Eli Michaelis (Wauwatosa, Wis.). Rhode Island tallied one more run in the top of the ninth and held a 9-2 lead heading into the bottom half.

Wisconsin Lutheran scored two runs in its last at-bat. Senior Henry Strupp (Watertown, Wis.) reached on an error, which scored junior Noah Zaccanti (Geneva, Ill.). Junior Elijah Shevey (Muskego, Wis.) drove in sophomore Tim Frerking (Oconomowoc, Wis.) with a RBI single, but it wasn't enough as the Warriors fell 9-4.

Shevey had three of WLC's seven hits and Frerking tallied two. Shevey, Montgomery, and Hodgins all drove in one run for Wisconsin Lutheran.

The Warriors (2-5) play another single game tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET against Skidmore (2-2) at Terry Park in Fort Myers.
