Skidmore Survives Extra-Inning Battle With Warriors

Engelhardt's three hits, two RBI lead WLC

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College dropped a back-and-forth extra-inning battle with Skidmore, 10-9, on Monday in a non-conference game at Terry Park.

The Warriors (2-6) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Senior Jake Sillan (Castle Rock, Colo.) got it started with a deep fly ball that was dropped, which scored a pair of runs, and sophomore Oliver Lopeztello (Chicago, Ill.) drove in Sillan with a RBI single. WLC tallied another run in the top of the third thanks to a solo home run from junior Nolan Hodgins (Caledonia, Wis.) for a 4-0 advantage.

The Thoroughbreds (3-2) responded with five runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning to take a one-run lead.

Wisconsin Lutheran recaptured the lead in the top of the fourth inning with a trio of runs. A double from freshman Aiden Montgomery (St. Louis, Mo.) scored Lopeztello, and senior Foster Engelhardt (North Richland Hills, Texas) drove in Montgomery and junior Elijah Shevey (Muskego, Wis.) with single up the middle.

SU added four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-7 lead. The Warriors knotted the contest at 9-9 in the top of the seventh with RBI singles from Montgomery and Hodgins. The score remained tied until the bottom of the 10th, when a Skidmore baserunner stole third and scored the game-winning run on wild throw from the catcher, as WLC fell short of a victory.

Engelhardt led Wisconsin Lutheran with three hits, while Shevey, Montgomery, Hodgins, Sillan, sophomore Eli Michaelis (Wauwatosa, Wis.), and senior Henry Strupp (Watertown, Wis.) each had two hits. Montgomery, Engelhardt, and Hodgins also drove in a pair of runs.

The Warriors' next game is against Haverford (5-2) on Tuesday, March 12 at 9 a.m. ET at Terry Park in Fort Myers. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
