Men's Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Friday Night Battle With Pointers

Drew Wempner ties career high with 12 kills

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College jumped out to sizable leads in each of the first two sets against UW-Stevens Point on Friday, but was unable to close them out in a 3-0 non-conference defeat at the Time of Grace Center.

The Warriors (3-14), who held seven-point leads in each of the first two sets, fell to the Pointers (9-7) for the second time this season by scores of 25-23, 25-23, 25-15.

WLC, which erased an early 5-3 deficit, jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the first set. Wisconsin Lutheran led 19-15 before UWSP went on a 7-1 run to take a lead it would never relinquish. The Warriors broke away from a pair of early ties in the second set for a 20-13 advantage. UW-Stevens Point put together a 10-1 scoring run to take control of set two. The Pointers broke away from a 12-12 tie, the 10th deadlock of the third set, with another 10-1 scoring run to take command and win the match.

Sophomore Drew Wempner (West Allis, Wis.) tied a career high with a match-high 12 kills. Senior Chris Mann (Laveen, Ariz.) tallied 10 kills and 10 digs for his first career double-double. Juniors Jay Thammavongsa (Franklin, Wis.) and James Biedenbender (La Crosse, Wis.) recorded 16 and 14 assists, respectively. Sophomore Trevor Salutric (Lockport, Ill.) registered a match-high 12 digs and freshman Sean Kane (Tinley Park, Ill.) had four block assists.

Spencer Baeckman had a team-high nine kills and Josh Brogren tallied a double-double of 25 assists and 10 digs for UWSP, which hit .209 with 35 kills, 12 errors, and 110 total attempts.

WLC travels to Fond du Lac on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. NACC matchup against Marian (12-4, 3-1 NACC). Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
