WLC Breaks Out The Bats In Dominating Sweep Of Alverno

Warriors tally 25 runs, smash three homers in twinbill

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College combined to score 25 runs on its way to a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep of Alverno on Saturday at Neumann Family Field. The Warriors won game one 10-2 in six innings before cruising to a 15-1 five-inning victory in game two.

WLC (8-14, 4-4 NACC) plated a pair of first-inning runs in the opener off a RBI single from senior Ashley Corley (Plainfield, Ill.) and a sacrifice fly from freshman Alea Anhalt (Fond du Lac, Wis.). Anhalt's two-out RBI double in the third made it 3-0 in favor of Wisconsin Lutheran. The Warriors broke open the game with four runs on three hits in the fifth. Senior Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) smacked a RBI double and Anhalt followed with a three-run homerun for a 7-0 advantage. AC (3-15, 1-1 NACC) cracked the scoring column in the sixth with two runs on four hits, but WLC quickly responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to end the game via run-rule. Junior Gwen Malecke (Gilberts, Ill.) doubled in two runs with the bases loaded and Corley reached on a game-winning fielder's choice as the 10th run of the game came across to score.

Anhalt finished 2-for-2 with five RBI and a run to lead Wisconsin Lutheran at the plate in game one. Martin went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run, while Malecke and Corley drove in two runs each. Freshman Madison Heller (South Milwaukee, Wis.) scored three times. Junior Melissa Tonn (West Allis, Wis.) won her fourth game of the season in the circle, allowing two runs over 6.0 innings with two strikeouts.

The Warriors once again struck for a pair of first-inning runs on back-to-back RBI hits from Martin and Corley. WLC answered Alverno's only run of the game in the second with a four-run frame in the bottom half. Senior Maddy Chestolowski (Appleton, Wis.) leadoff the inning with a solo homerun, Malecke's single drove in a run four batters later, and Martin followed with a two-run blast the next at-bat for a 6-1 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran added three runs in the third on RBI singles from Chestolowski and senior Briana Vilches (Fontana, Calif.). Freshman Ally Stancel (Yorkville, Ill.) scored on a passed ball for the eight-run cushion. The Warriors pushed across six runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth as 11 players came to the plate. WLC had run scoring hits from Anhalt, senior Kyla Elliott (Chicago, Ill.), and freshmen Deanna King (Scottsburg, Ind.) and Zoe Precup (Oswego, Ill.).

Anhalt was 3-for-3 with a run scored for Wisconsin Lutheran, which totaled season highs for runs (15), hits (16), and RBI (13). Heller, Martin, and Chestolowski registered two hits apiece, while Martin and Chestolowski each drove in three runs. Heller also scored three runs. Sophomore Emily Brands (Zeeland, Mich.) collected her third win of the season after allowing just one run on four hits over 4.0 innings.

The Warriors continue their eight-game homestand tomorrow with another NACC doubleheader against St. Norbert (6-22, 2-10 NACC). First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Neumann Family Field. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
