WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College split its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader of the season on Sunday with St. Norbert at Neumann Family Field. The Warriors came from behind to win the opener, 9-6, before falling to the Green Knights in the nightcap, 6-4, in 10 innings.
SNC jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning of game one behind five hits. WLC got four of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning, however. Freshman
Alea Anhalt (Fond du Lac, Wis.) got it started with a two-RBI single, driving in freshman
Madison Heller (South Milwaukee, Wis.) and senior
Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.). Senior
Ashley Corley (Plainfield, Ill.) stole home and senior
Maddy Chestolowski (Appleton, Wis.) drove in Anhalt with a double.
A two-out solo homerun to right from Martin tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the second. Wisconsin Lutheran took the lead in the bottom of the third, plating three runs. Junior
Allison Powers (Sun Prairie, Wis.) singled to left, scoring Anhalt. Powers later scored on a single from freshman
Sommer Krull (New London, Wis.), and junior
Cara Velez (Chicago, Ill.) drove in junior
Olivia Krieser (Stoughton, Wis.) for the final run of the inning with a pinch hit single to center. The Warriors tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth when Corley stole home. St. Norbert hit a solo shot in the fifth, but couldn't close the gap as WLC took the opener.
Anhalt recorded three hits and two RBIÂ for Wisconsin Lutheran, while Martin and Powers each tallied a pair of hits. Junior
Melissa Tonn (West Allis, Wis.) picked up her fifth win of the season as she threw 5.0 innings, giving up six runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts. Sophomore
Emily Brands (Zeeland, Mich.) notched her first save of the season.
Following a scoreless first-inning frame in game two, both teams plated a two-out run in the second inning. Sophomore
Emily Cardenas (Lake Stevens, Wash.) drove in Corley with a sacrifice fly to right. The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth when the Warriors scored three times. Heller drove in sophomore
Juliana Sieber (Oconto, Wis.) with a single, Heller later scored on a double from Anhalt, and Martin plated Anhalt with a double of her own. The Green Knights picked up a run in the sixth and a pair in the seventh, tying the game at 4-4 and sending it to extra innings, where they eventually won it in the top of the 10th with a two-run single after capitalizing on three WLC miscues.Â
Heller and Martin each had two hits each for Wisconsin Lutheran and four other players drove in runs.
