WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College erased an early 5-0 deficit, but Carroll scored three go-ahead runs in the eighth inning as the Pioneers held on for an 8-6 non-conference win over the Warriors on Sunday at Neumann Family Field.
WLC, which wrapped up a seven-game homestand, found itself in an early hole as CU scored four runs in the first on two hits and another in the second on a two-out RBI double. Wisconsin Lutheran responded with a three-run frame in the bottom of the second. Junior
Noah Zaccanti (Geneva, Ill.) doubled to right, scoring sophomore
Tim Frerking (Oconomowoc, Wis.). Junior
Elijah Shevey (Muskego, Wis.) followed four batters later with a two-run single, sending in Zaccanti and freshman
Ian Rintelman (Muskego, Wis.).
A two-run shot down the right field line in the bottom of the third from junior
Nolan Hodgins (Caledonia, Wis.) knotted the score at 5-5. Senior
Gabe Knight (Brighton, Mich.) threw five shutout relief innings as the score was still tied 5-5 heading to the eighth, when Carroll broke the tie by plating three runs on four hits. The Warriors' first two batters reached safely in the bottom of the ninth, and a grounder to second from Frerking drove in freshman
Aiden Montgomery (St. Louis, Mo.), but the tying run was left at the plate when the game ended.
Hodgins and Zaccanti finished 2-for-5 with a run scored for WLC. Hodgins, who hit his team-leading fifth homerun of the season, and Shevey drove in a pair of runs.
