MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College opened its 2024 season on Friday at the Maryville Invitational, falling 3-0 to Randolph-Macon at the Cooper Athletic Center.
The Warriors (0-1), who held leads midway through the first and third sets, fell to the Yellow Jackets (1-1) in three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-23.
In an opening set that featured eight ties and four lead changes, WLC jumped out to a 5-2 lead behind a service ace from junior
Kayla Wigley (Milwaukee, Wis.). Wisconsin Lutheran held a slim 12-11 advantage before RMC rattled off an 11-2 scoring run. Randolph-Macon hit a match-high .357 to take the opening set 25-16.
The Yellow Jackets surged out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, as the Warriors came no closer than three points the rest of the way. RMC scored seven of the final nine points to take set two 25-14.Â
WLC, which lead for the majority of the third set, jumped out to a 10-6 lead following a service ace from junior
Lily Schuetz (Lake Mills, Wis.), matching its largest lead of the set. After Randolph-Macon knotted the score at 10-10, Wisconsin Lutheran went back in front 19-15 after a Schuetz kill, but a 6-0 scoring run vaulted the Yellow Jackets in front for the first time. The Warriors forced a tie twice (21-21, 22-22), but RMC clinched match point with a kill for the 25-23 victory.Â
WLC finished the match hitting .093 with 33 kills, 23 errors, and 107 attempts. Schuetz led the team with seven kills. Wigley added six kills, 11 digs, and a pair of service aces. Senior
Emma Incaprero (Mauston, Wis.) recorded a match-high 12 assists, while senior
Kylee Gnabasik (Jefferson, Wis.) led all players with 15 digs.
