WLC Sweeps Monmouth In Home Opener

Halliburton hits .625 with 11 kills for Warriors

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College opened its 2024 home schedule with a 3-0 sweep over Monmouth (IL) on Friday at the Time of Grace Center. Junior Bailey Halliburton (Germantown, Wis.) led the Warriors with 11 kills, while posting the second-highest hitting percentage (.625) in a match in program history.

WLC (3-1) secured its second consecutive sweep and ninth straight set victory by sweeping the Fighting Scots (3-2) by scores of 25-20, 25-22, 25-17. Wisconsin Lutheran hit a season-best .303 with 41 kills, 11 errors, and 99 attempts.

The Warriors jumped out to a 7-1 lead over MC and never trailed in the opening set. With the set knotted at 13-13, WLC scored six of the next seven points to pull away and take the first set 25-20. In a second set that featured nine ties and two lead changes, Wisconsin Lutheran held a 12-9 edge before Monmouth came back to take its first lead at 14-13. Trailing 20-18, the Warriors rattled off six of the next seven points to hold on for the 25-22 win. Despite a pair of third set ties, WLC never trailed on its way to jumping out to a 12-4 advantage. Wisconsin Lutheran led by as many as 10 points twice before taking the third set 25-17.

Halliburton was the only player to reach double-digit kills with 11, while hitting an impressive .625 with four total blocks. Junior Kayla Wigley (Milwaukee, Wis.) added eight kills, while junior Lydia Biggin (Burlington, Wis.) had seven. Senior Karah Valerio (Pewaukee, Wis.) led all players with 20 assists. Freshman Madison Luebke (Valders, Wis.) recorded four block assists in addition to her five kills. Senior Kylee Gnabasik (Jefferson, Wis.) recorded a match-high 15 digs.

The Warriors host two more matches tomorrow at the Time of Grace Center, welcoming in Wheaton (IL) (3-1) at 10 a.m. and Dubuque (3-3) at 12 p.m. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
