FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College opened the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a pair of losses to Skidmore, 4-1 and 8-4, on Sunday at Terry Park.
GAME 1
The Thoroughbreds struck first with a sac fly in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman
Colin Nigl (Neenah, Wis.) led off the bottom of the third with a single and later scored on an error from the catcher to tie the score at 1-1. SC tacked on two runs in the fourth and another one in the sixth to take a 4-1 advantage. The Warriors had a chance to answer in the bottom of the sixth with runners on the corners and nobody out, but Skidmore struck out three straight batters to escape any damage and pick up the 4-1 victory.
Sophomore
Aiden Montgomery (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded two of the four WLC hits, with the other two coming from Nigl and freshman
Jacob Lorbecki (Richfield, Wis.).Â
Six different Thoroughbreds (2-1-1) tallied a hit each. Quinn Holcom tossed 6.0 innings, allowing one run and tallying 14 strikeouts.Â
GAME 2
SC scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran knotted the score the following inning with a RBI single from Nigl, which plated sophomore
Colt Ratliff (Oxford, Ga.). Skidmore answered with one in third, but the Warriors tied it back up in the fourth, as Nigl scored on a sac bunt from freshman
Ryan Pierquet (Chilton, Wis.). The Thoroughbreds plated a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. A triple from Ratliff scored Montgomery and senior
Nolan Hodgins (Caledonia, Wis.) in the bottom of the fifth, but another three-run sixth from SC put the game out of reach as they picked up the 8-4 win.Â
Ratliff registered three hits and two RBI for WLC, while Montgomery and Nigl each collected a pair of hits.Â
Ewen Darnold led the offensive attack for Skidmore, driving in three runs with two hits.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-4) returns to Terry Park on Monday for a single non-conference game against Haverford (2-2). First pitch is set for 12 p.m. ET. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
