LISLE, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - Powered by a monster day at the plate in game two from sophomore
Alea Anhalt (Fond du Lac, Wis.), Wisconsin Lutheran College defeated Benedictine 10-3 at Heidkamp Field on Sunday. The Eagles run-ruled the Warriors 11-0 in five innings in the first game of their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader.
GAME 1
BenU jumped out early with six first-inning runs on four hits, but a two-out error opened the floodgates for four unearned runs. Benedictine added a single run in the second on a double steal, two tallies in the third on RBI hits, and scored its last two in the fourth on a RBI single and fielding error. WLC threatened to get on the scoreboard in the fifth by loading the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the game in four-and-a-half innings.
Senior
Olivia Krieser (Stoughton, Wis.) and sophomore
Julianna Alloy (Harrison Township, Michigan) registered Wisconsin Lutheran's two hits, while seniors
Gwen Malecke (Gilberts, Ill.) and
Allison Powers (Sun Prairie, Wis.) each draw a walk.
Four players tallied two hits apiece for the Eagles, led by Victoria Duszynski (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 R) and Mckenzie Johnson (2-for-3, 2 RBI). Johnson also picked up the win in the circle by throwing 4.2 innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts.
GAME 2
The Warriors got on the board in the first inning when freshman
Maritza Martinez (Kenosha, Wis.) delivered a two-out RBI single. WLC's bats stayed hot in the third with Anhalt and freshman
Kylie Gaston (Albertville, Minn.) belting back-to-back solo homers pushing the lead to three. BenU clawed back with two runs in the fourth with a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Wisconsin Lutheran responded immediately. Anhalt led off the fifth with a double and later came around to score on another single from
Maritza Martinez, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Alloy added a RBI single in the frame, after Krieser knocked in another run on a fielder's choice to stretch the lead to 6-2.
The Warriors continued to pile on late, with a two-out RBI double from Malecke in the sixth, and three more runs in the seventh, including a two-run single from Anhalt, capping her career-best performance. Benedictine added a late unearned run in the last of the seventh.
Anhalt went a perfect 5-for-5, finishing a triple shy of the cycle with two doubles, a homerun, three RBI, and three runs scored. Alloy chipped in a 3-for-3 day with two RBI, while sophomore
Sommer Krull (New London, Wis.) scored twice and added two hits of her own. Malecke also tacked on two of WLC's season-high 17 hits.
Freshman
Teagan Piven (Plainfield, Ill.) earned the win in relief, tossing 4.0 strong innings while allowing just one unearned run on three hits, striking out three.
For the Eagles (15-11, 4-6 NACC), Duszynski led the offense with a 2-for-3 day, including a double and a run. BenU's pitching carousel saw five different arms in the circle, with starter Jasmine Lozano taking the loss after surrendering three runs in 2.1 innings.
