Late Rally Falls Short For Softball In Sweep At CUC

Krieser collects two hits and two RBI in game two

RIVER FOREST, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College came up short in both games of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Concordia Chicago. The Warriors dropped the opener to the Cougars 8-0 in five innings, before falling 4-3 in the nightcap.

GAME 1
CUC scored three runs, two unearned, on two hits in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead over WLC. Senior Allison Powers (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and freshman Amara Martinez (Freeport, Texas) reached base on consecutive Concordia Chicago errors in the third, but could not be brought around to score.

Sophomore Sommer Krull (New London, Wis.) recorded Wisconsin Lutheran's first base hit of the game with two outs in the top of the fourth. The game remained 3-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the Cougars collected five runs on five hits to break the game open.

Emily Garcia went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs for CUC. Alyssa Lopez allowed just one hit over 4.0 innings to pickup the win in the circle.

GAME 2
Concordia Chicago collected all six of its hits through the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead over the Warriors, plating one in the opening inning and three in the second. WLC mustered its first two hits in the third, including a RBI double by senior Olivia Krieser (Stoughton, Wis.) to get on the board. Wisconsin Lutheran had runners at the corners with just one out in the fourth, but a double-play put an end to a potential rally.

The game remained 4-1 in favor of the home team until the seventh. The Warriors put together three straight two-out hits, including back-to-back RBI singles by freshman Mia Alejo (Sacramento, Calif.) and Krieser to come within a run. WLC had runners at second and third before the Cougars induced a groundout for the game's final out.

Krieser finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while sophomore Ally Stancel (Yorkville, Ill.) went 2-for-3 with two runs. Alejo and freshman Kylie Gaston (Albertville, Minn.) each added a hit. Freshman Teagan Piven (Plainfield, Ill.) pitched the final 4.2 innings in relief without allowing a hit or a run with three strikeouts.

Garcia and Alyssa Campos had two hits apiece for CUC (21-12-1, 14-4 NACC). Eden Pufahl picked up the win with 3.2 innings of middle relief, while Ashley Shroll recorded the final out for the save.

Wisconsin Lutheran (9-23, 4-14 NACC) travels to Mequon tomorrow for a 12 p.m. NACC doubleheader against Concordia Wisconsin (23-9, 14-4 NACC) at Catalyst Park. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
