MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College earned its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season with a 3-0 sweep over Alverno on Wednesday at Reiman Gymnasium. The Warriors improved to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in NACC play with set scores of 25-20, 25-16, and 25-12.
The opening set was tightly contested, with the teams trading points until the Warriors used an 8-1 scoring run late to pull away for a 25-20 victory. In the second set, WLC seized control midway through with an 8-2 surge, highlighted by multiple kills from seniors
Lydia Biggin (Burlington, Wis.) and
Kayla Wigley (Milwaukee, Wis.), to take the frame 25-16. Wisconsin Lutheran raced out quickly in the third, using an 11-4 spurt fueled by six aces and balanced attacking to close out the sweep, 25-12.
Biggin and Wigley led the Warriors with nine kills apiece, while senior
Emily Marohn (Reedsville, Wis.) and freshman
Brooklyn Lenz (Oconomowoc, Wis.) added eight kills each. Sophomore
Elexa Varden (Dixon, Ill.) hit a team-high .545 with seven kills. Freshman
Lauren Charbonneau (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) orchestrated the attack with 37 assists, and sophomore
Willa Hollander (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied four of the team's 12 service aces. Wigley and Marohn led the team in digs with 16 and 15, respectively.
For Alverno (2-9, 0-1 NACC), Mary Needham paced the team with 11 kills, Sharisty Kooch recorded a team-high 12 assists, and Holly King finished with eight digs.
WLC finished with a season-high .340 hitting percentage, while limiting Alverno to .105 hitting.
Wisconsin Lutheran hosts a non-conference triangular on Friday with UW-La Crosse (10-6) and Lake Forest (2-6) at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
