MSOE Hands WLC First Home Loss

Warriors travel to league unbeaten Illinois Tech on Saturday

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College dropped a 2-0 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference decision to Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday at Warriors Soccer Field.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Raiders broke through with a pair of second-half goals to secure the conference road victory.

The Warriors (9-2-0, 4-2-0 NACC) held firm defensively throughout the first half behind two saves from junior goalkeeper Sam Schroeder (Brookfield, Wis.). WLC generated scoring opportunities in the 58th and 59th minutes, but back-to-back attempts on target from juniors Joleigh Blahnik (De Pere, Wis.) and Ava Collyard (Richfield, Wis.) were turned away by MSOE goalkeeper Teya Baxter.

The Raiders (7-3-4, 5-0-2 NACC) capitalized shortly after, breaking the deadlock in the 62nd minute when Hadleigh Ostrenga set up Shealan Biniam for her second goal of the season. MSOE doubled its advantage in the 77th minute when Kiley Schmitt netted an unassisted tally to seal the 2-0 result.

The Raiders finished with an 18-5 advantage in total shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. MSOE also earned an 11-4 margin in corner kicks.

Junior Ginny Shade (Thornton, Colo.) led Wisconsin Lutheran's attack with two shots (one on goal), while Blahnik, Collyard, and junior Morgan Bluhm (New Berlin, Wis.) registered one attempt apiece. Schroeder went the full 90 minutes in goal, stopping four shots.

Faith Papazoglou paced the Raiders with a match-high five shots (two on goal), followed closely by Schmitt with four shots. Baxter posted a three-save clean sheet.

The Warriors look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to Chicago to face Illinois Tech (10-4, 7-0 NACC). Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Stuart Field.
