WLC Drops Doubleheader To Alfred St. To Open Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

Warriors take on Geneva tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Alfred St. by scores of 10-3 and 5-3 in its first games of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at Terry Park.

Game 1 - Alfred St. 10, Wisconsin Lutheran 3
The Warriors struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Ryan Pierquet (Chilton, Wis.) singled and moved to third on an error before sophomore Jacob Lorbecki (Richfield, Wis.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring him home for a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers responded in the second inning with a solo homerun and an RBI single for a 2-1 advantage. ASU added to its lead in the third with a solo homerun.

Alfred St. extended the lead with two runs in the fourth inning to make it 5-1, and broke the game open in the fifth with four runs on four hits. The Pioneers added one more run in the sixth on an RBI groundout for their final runs of the game.

WLC responded in the bottom of the sixth. Pierquet singled and Lorbecki followed with a base hit before junior Ian Rintelman (Muskego, Wis.) lined a two-run double down the left-field line to score both runners and cut the deficit to 10-3.

Wisconsin Lutheran finished with five hits in the contest. Pierquet led the team with two hits, while Rintelman drove in two runs.

ASU collected 18 hits, led by Logan Lutz, Gavin Lasko, and Matty Eygabroad with three apiece. Jordan Hughes struckout seven over 5.0 innings to collect the win.

Game 2 – Alfred St. 5, Wisconsin Lutheran 3
The Warriors struck first again with two runs in the opening inning. Lorbecki singled and later scored when senior Zach Alburg (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) lined an RBI single to shortstop. Alburg then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, allowing Rintelman to score on the play for a 2-0 lead.

Alfred St. answered immediately in the bottom half of the first with a two-run homer to right-center.

WLC regained the lead in the fourth inning when sophomore Connor Zorn (Huntley, Wis.) launched a solo homerun to right field to make it 3-2.

The Pioneers pulled even in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice bunt that plated the tying run. ASU took the lead for good in the sixth inning with a two-run single through the left side for a 5-3 advantage.

Wisconsin Lutheran collected seven hits in the loss, led by Zorn with two hits and an RBI. Alburg also drove in a run.

Frank Grad paced Alfred St. (3-11) with two hits, while Eygabroad finished with a game-high three RBI. Daniel Lewis earned the win in relief for the Pioneers, tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

The Warriors (0-5) return to Terry Park tomorrow for a single game against Geneva (3-1) at 3 p.m. ET.
