Wascher Hurls No-Hitter In Softball’s Sweep Over Maranatha Baptist

WLC outscores MBU 30-1 on the day

FRANKLIN, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Sophomore Brianna Wascher (South Elgin, Ill.) tossed a five-inning no-hitter to cap off a big day for Wisconsin Lutheran College, which swept Maranatha Baptist 14-1 and 16-0 in a pair of five-inning non-conference games on Thursday at Franklin High School.

Game 1: Wisconsin Lutheran 14, Maranatha Baptist 1 (5 Inn.)
The Warriors (13-13) sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning, capitalizing on five hits, two Sabercats errors, and several passed balls to build a commanding 10-0 lead. After junior Madison Heller (South Milwaukee, Wis.) opened the scoring sequence by coming around on freshman Peyton Crutcher's (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) RBI fielder's choice, sophomore Daylanna Morgese (Milwaukee, Wis.) drove in the second run with a groundout. WLC continued to pile on from there, getting an RBI sacrifice fly from sophomore Raquel Shields (Itasca, Ill.), an RBI triple from freshman Madi Kaprelian (Racine, Wis.), and run-scoring hits from Heller, Crutcher, and Morgese.

Wisconsin Lutheran added three more runs in the second inning to extend the lead to 13-0. Morgese delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-run single to center, while freshman Victoria Konieczny (Medford, Wis.) drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run. The Warriors tacked on their final run in the fourth on a wild pitch.

Morgese led WLC offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double, four RBIs, and a run scored. Crutcher finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Kaprelian scored twice and added an RBI triple. Heller scored twice, drove in a run and stole two bases. Ruth also added a hit and scored once as Wisconsin Lutheran totaled six hits and drew 10 walks. Senior Emily Brands (Zeeland, Mich.) earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete five-inning game. She allowed one unearned run on two hits, walked one, and struck out five.

MBU (0-14) was limited to just two hits, with Ryleigh Bill and Louise Harris recording the Maranatha Baptist's only hits.

Game 2: Wisconsin Lutheran 16, Maranatha Baptist 0 (5 Inn.)
The Warriors wasted no time taking control, scoring four runs in the opening inning. Freshman Rebecca Reddeman (Canton, Mich.) led off with a single and later scored on an RBI groundout by Kaprelian. Morgese came home on a Sabercats throwing error before Ruth and Shields delivered back-to-back RBI doubles to push the lead to 4-0.

WLC added another run in the second on freshman Addyson Wheeler's (Freeport, Ill.) RBI single, then broke the game wide open with an eight-run third inning. Ruth drove in two with a single, Shields added an RBI single, freshman Emma Lighthizer (Kenosha, Wis.) brought home another run with a base hit, and Morgese highlighted the frame with a three-run double as Wisconsin Lutheran stretched the advantage to 13-0.

The Warriors tacked on three more in the fourth. Freshman Ellie Scott (Chaska, Minn.) doubled home a run, Konieczny brought in another on an error, and sophomore Molly Kelly (Hortonville, Wis.) capped the scoring with an RBI single to center.

WLC was led at the plate by Morgese, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a game-high three RBIs, while Ruth went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Shields turned in a perfect 3-for-3 day with two runs scored and an RBI, and sophomore Natalie Jordan (Cincinnati, Ohio) added a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored. Lighthizer also contributed two hits and an RBI in reserve duty.

Wascher earned the win with a five-inning no-hitter, allowing no runs on two walks while striking out six. She faced just 17 batters and did not allow a hit in the run-rule shortened contest.

Wisconsin Lutheran returns to Franklin High School on Saturday for an 11 a.m. NACC doubleheader against Dominican (15-11, 9-3 NACC). Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
