MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
football team dug deep in the final seconds on Saturday to pull out
a 28-26 victory over Kalamazoo College on Homecoming at Raabe
Stadium.
The drama lasted until the final four seconds of the game when
the Warriors blocked the Hornets' game-winning field goal attempt
and Raabe Stadium erupted in euphoria.
Kalamazoo struck early and led after one quarter of play by a
score of 14-0. The Warriors answered back in the second quarter
with 14 points of their own. Brad Marshall (Cudahy, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) returned a six-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, and
halfback Larry Hairl (Chicago, Ill./Roberto Clemente) scored on a
14-yard run with 2:51 left in the half. The Hornets led 17-14 at
the half.
Hairl was not finished as he scored on an 11-yard pass from Josh
McCormick (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) to take the lead
in the third quarter, 21-20. Wisconsin Lutheran then scored on a
T.J. Bodnar (Racine, Wis./Park) one-yard quarterback sneak to put
WLC up by eight points (28-20) early in the fourth. Kalamazoo
answered on a 19-yard pass from Jordan Tallman to Randy Rzeznik to
climb within two points. WLC's defense stiffened and stopped the
Hornets from converting on a two-point conversion attempt.
Finally, after Kalamazoo drove down to the Warriors' 15 yard
line with four seconds left in the game to set up for the
game-winning field goal attempt, the kick was blocked by the
defensive line to seal with win, snapping the Warriors' 16-game
conference losing streak.
Hairl had a huge afternoon offensively for the Warriors, piling
up 219 yards of total offense alone. He rushed for 149 yards and a
touchdown and also caught four passes for 70 yards and a score
through the air.
Wisconsin Lutheran was led defensively by Colin Makepace (Cape
Canaveral, Fla./Cocoa Beach), who totaled a game-high 10 tackles.
Four different players added a sack and seven played had at least
one pass breakup.
Kalamazoo (1-5, 0-4) quarterback Jordan Tallman threw for 360
yards as he completed 37 of 63 passes. Chris Coriasso hauled in
seven passes for 108 yards.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-5, 1-3 MIAA) travels to Adrian, Mich.,
next week for a game against the Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled for
11 a.m. at Multisport Performance Stadium.
