MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 93-90 decision to the
Aurora University Spartans in the Warriors' first Northern
Athletics Conference game of the season on Tuesday night at the
Recreation Complex.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which held a slim lead two different times
in the early stages of the first half, trailed by as many as 11
(28-17) and went into the locker room down 49-39 as the Spartans
shot 60.6 percent (20-33).
Larry Welton, a preseason First Team All-American by
D3hoops.com, did not play in the first half for the Spartans, and
finished the game with 10 points.
In the second half of action, the Warriors cut Aurora's margin
to within one basket twice during the half, but couldn't seem to
get over the top. The Spartans led by 14 (71-57) with 11:51
remaining only to see Wisconsin Lutheran come back and trail 91-90
and have a chance for the game-winning shot with :11 seconds
left.
Kyle Plath's (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) three-point
attempt caromed off the back iron but was layed-in by Nate Sorum
(Mequon, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) for what appeared to be the
game-winning bucket. However, the basket was waived off as Sorum
was called for a foul on the play.
Marcus Zondag (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) led all scorers with 27
points, the second straight game that he has poured in 27. Sorum,
who scored all of his points in the second half, and Christian
Lindberg (Horsens, Denmark) each finished with 16. Plath and Danny
Behm (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) added 15 and 13
points, respectively.
WLC out-rebounded Aurora, 36-27, which included a 16-7 advantage
on the offensive glass. For the game, AU shot 58.7 percent from the
field, opposed to 48.5 percent for WLC.
Aurora (4-2, 2-0 NAC), which also had five players reach
double-digits, was led by Chad Trudo's 21 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-2, 0-1 NAC) concludes its six-game
homestand on Saturday when it hosts the Dominican University Stars.
The game, which is part of a doubleheader with the women's team,
tips-off at 7:15 p.m.
