MEQUON, Wis. - Concordia University Wisconsin
scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and went on to
defeat Wisconsin Lutheran College 31-17 on Saturday afternoon at
Century Stadium to claim the Luther Cup in the inaugural Lutheran
Bowl.
Wisconsin Lutheran carried a 17-14 lead into the fourth quarter,
but the Falcons used a field goal and two touchdowns, including one
defensively, to defeat the Warriors.
Concordia Wisconsin built a 14-0 lead with 13:36 left in the
second quarter off of a pair of touchdown passes. The Warriors got
on the scoreboard at the 5:52 mark when John Bodnar (Racine,
Wis./Park) connected with Dominique Johnson (Milwaukee,
Wis./Vincent) for a 30-yard scoring strike. A 25-yard field goal by
Heikki Luoma (Helsinki, Finland) with 14 seconds left before
halftime put WLC within four points, 14-10, at the half.
The Warriors took a 17-14 lead with 10:40 on the third quarter
clock when Shem Biebert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Croix
Lutheran) caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Bodnar. The score
remained 17-14 in favor of WLC heading into the final quarter. The
Falcons connected on a 39-yard field goal on the first play of the
fourth quarter to tie the game 17-17. CUW regained the lead at 7:02
on a four-yard touchdown run and added a late interception return
for a score to gain possession of the Luther Cup.
Bodnar finished 15-for-30 for 154 yards and two touchdowns in
his first start under center for the Warriors. Johnson caught seven
passes for 116 yards and one touchdown to lead the receiving corps.
WLC finished with 216 yards of total offense, compared to 349 for
Concordia Wisconsin.
Defensively, Shaun Stannard (Merton, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
finished with a game-high nine tackles for the Warriors, who sacked
Falcon quarterback Nathan Chart six times. Alex Allister (Lake
Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) recovered a pair of fumbles.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-4, 2-2 NAC) continues its two-game road
swing next Saturday by traveling to Aurora, Ill., for a matchup
with the current conference-leading Spartans. Kickoff is scheduled
for 1 p.m. at Vago Field.
