ROCKFORD, Ill. - Five players scored in double
figures as the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team
held off Rockford College 94-89 on Saturday at the Seaver Center to
earn its first Northern Athletics Conference victory of the
season.
Kyle Plath (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) and Sam
Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) each poured in
22 points, while Danny Behm (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
added 13 points, all of which came in the first half. Siemers, who
scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half, also hauled down 12
rebounds for his second straight double-double.
Jeremy Burmeister (Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) and Shawn
Glasel (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) chipped in with 10
points each.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which shot 60 percent (18-for-30) in the
first half, jumped out to a 20-4 lead only to see the Regents come
back and tie the score at 32-32 with 6:21 left in the opening half.
The Warriors managed to head into halftime with a 50-46
advantage.
The Warriors maintained their lead throughout the second half
and led by as many as 17 points (78-61) with 10:36 left to play.
Rockford would not go away though, trimming the deficit to only two
points, 86-84, with 2:48 left on the clock. The Warriors sealed the
victory by making their final three shot attempts, including a pair
of Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) free throws.
WLC, which out-rebounded Rockford 52-40, finished the game
shooting 51.6 percent (33-for-64). The Regents shot 40.2 percent
(35-for-87) from the floor. The Warriors converted on 20 of 27 free
throw attempts, while the host Regents went 7-for-14 from the
charity stripe.
Willie Howard scored 18 points off the bench to lead five
players in double figures for Rockford (4-5, 1-3 NAC). Andrew Weber
tallied 17 points to go along with 14 rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-4, 1-1 NAC) travels to Daytona Beach,
Fla., for the Bahama House Classic on January 2 and 3. The Warriors
will face Baruch College on January 2 at 4 p.m., followed by a
matchup against either Covenant University or host Embry-Riddle
University on January 3.
