BELOIT, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team returned to the diamond after a three-week layoff and
was swept by Beloit College in a non-conference doubleheader at The
Ballpark at Strong Stadium on Saturday.
Playing in its first game since March 7, without having
practiced outdoors since its spring trip to Florida, Wisconsin
Lutheran fell to the Buccaneers by scores of 9-5 and 2-0.
During the first game, the Warriors took a 5-3 lead into the
bottom half of the fourth inning when Beloit took the lead for good
when it rallied for five runs. The Bucs scored one more and the
Warriors could not rally back and lost the game by a final score of
9-5.
Both teams had to shake off some rust due to cold weather,
forcing them to practice indoors for quite some time. There were
nine total errors committed in the game, five of which were
committed by WLC.
Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) went 2-for-3 with
two runs scored and AJ Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove
Christian) also went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
As the weather became colder during the second game, so did the
bats. Beloit and Wisconsin Lutheran combined for just six hits in
the game, while the Warriors were responsible for just two of them.
Beloit scored twice in the first three innings and that was all
they needed as it shut out the Warriors 2-0.
Junior starting pitcher Cody Schmidt (Union City, Okla./Union
City) took the loss by throwing two innings, and giving up one run
(unearned) on two hits. Three relievers combined to pitch the
remaining four innings, giving up just one run on two hits.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-9) will make its second attempt at hosting
its home opener on Tuesday when it is scheduled to host Cardinal
Stritch University in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is
set for 2 p.m. at Neumann Family Field.
