CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Freshman Emily Foster
(Brookfield, Wis./East) drove in Rachel Doege (Menomonee Falls,
Wis./Menomonee Falls) in the top of the eighth to lead WLC to a 4-3
win over St. Joseph's College (Maine) Thursday afternoon in Cape
Coral, Fla.
After the Monks (1-5) scored an unearned run in the bottom of
the first, Foster led off the second with a single to center.
Freshman Jamie Matz (Hortonville, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran)
followed with a home run to take a 2-1 lead.
St. Joe's tied the game at 2-2 in the third and took the lead
run in the fourth. But WLC rallied in the top of the seventh to
bring the score to 3-3 as Matz scored on a wild pitch to force
extra innings.
Doege was placed on second base to begin the eighth due to the
international tie-breaker rule and advanced to third on senior
Michelle Shambeau's (Two Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) sacrifice
bunt. Foster then singled to right center for the game-winning
RBI.
The Warrior defense recorded three straight outs in the Monks'
half of the eighth, including Shambeau striking out the final
batter. Shambeau went the distance to pick up the win (2-2). She
struck out seven, walked one and gave up just five hits.
Wisconsin Lutheran College (2-4) wraps up its spring trip with
Friday contests against Tri-State and Worcester Polytechnic.
