RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team snapped a 10-game losing skid with a 9-8
victory over Concordia University Chicago on Tuesday afternoon.
The game was originally scheduled to take place last Saturday as
part of a doubleheader, but was postponed due to wet field
conditions.
Junior starting pitcher Cody Schmidt (Union City, Okla./Union
City) tamed the Cougar offense, but the Warriors were still down
2-0 until they exploded for six runs on seven hits in the fifth
inning. Both teams exchanged runs and Wisconsin Lutheran was up 8-5
heading into the ninth inning.
In the top of the ninth, Matt Essig (Lewiston, Minn./Luther)
singled home Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) for
what would be the game-winning run.
Concordia Chicago rallied back and scored three runs in the last
half of the ninth, but reliever John Lynch (Rosendale,
Wis./Laconia) escaped further damage by enticing a fly out to right
field with the tying run on third base.
The WLC offense had 17 hits, which was one shy of its season
high. Six Warriors had multi-hit games including Brad Marshall
(Cudahy, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) who went 3-for-5 with four
RBIs.
Barkhurst had three hits, two doubles, a stolen base and two
runs scored. Essig finished with two hits and two RBIs and Ryan
Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two
runs scored.
Schmidt earned his first win of the year throwing 6 2/3 innings
and giving up five runs.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-19, 2-10 NAC) hosts the MSOE Raiders on
Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Neumann Family
Field.
