MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team swept a pair of games from the MSOE Raiders on
Saturday afternoon at Neumann Family Field by scores of 14-12 and
4-3, respectively.
Wisconsin Lutheran sprinted out of the gate, scoring seven runs
in the first inning. MSOE scored five runs in the third, but the
Warriors answered right back with four of their own.
Down 13-5 after four innings, the Raiders would storm back to
cut the deficit to two, but the Warriors hung on, winning the game
14-12.
Wisconsin Lutheran finished with a season-high 19 hits in the
game. Almost half of those hits were claimed by Chris Glasel
(Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and A.J. Paczocha (Cudahy,
Wis./Union Grove Christian).
Glasel went 4-for-5 with a run and two RBIs and Paczocha went
5-for-5 with two doubles, four runs and an RBI. Ryan Pollesch
(Markesan, Wis./Markesan) also went 2-for-5 with five RBIs and a
run scored.
Austin Backhaus (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) pitched
seven innings to earn the win, and reliever Brandon Hutsen
(Oconomowoc, Wis./Lake Country Lutheran) threw two key innings to
hold the lead for the Warriors.
Pitching was the story in the second game. After five innings,
the Warriors found themselves down 1-0. Wisconsin Lutheran, though,
got on the board and scored three times in the sixth inning.
MSOE scored a run in the seventh and eighth inning to tie the
score at three. In the bottom of the eighth, Matt Essig (Lewiston,
Minn./Luther) drove in Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian)
for the winning run.
Essig led WLC by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Ferrell went
2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and a walk.
Josh Lemke (Brillion, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran), was outstanding
tossing a complete game, allowing only three runs, one walk and
striking out two.
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-19, 4-10 NAC) travels to Schaumberg, Ill.,
on Sunday for a doubleheader against the Dominican University
Stars. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Alexian Field.
