MILWAUKEE - The WLC baseball team dropped a NAC
doubleheader against visiting Benedictine, 8-3 and 10-9, Sunday
afternoon at the Neumann Family Field. The Warriors fall to 5-25
overall and 4-14 in the NAC, while BU's record improves to 21-14,
14-4.
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the second before WLC freshman
Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) singled and scored on a
Matt Essig (Lewiston, Minn./Luther) RBI in the bottom of the second
inning.
BU added a run in the top of the third and the Warriors followed
an inning later as junior AJ Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove
Christian) knocked in sophomore Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake Beach,
Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) to make it 4-2.
WLC scored just once again on Essig's second RBI of the day, but
the Eagles scored four more times over the next four innings to
pull away for the win.
Junior Cody Schmidt (Union City, Okla./Union City) pitched all
nine innings in the loss, allowing 12 hits and five earned
runs.
In game two, the Warriors fell behind 6-1 before posting six
runs in the bottom of the sixth. Essig and Paczocha recorded the
first two RBIs of the inning on singles. Ryan Pollesch (Markesan,
Wis./Markesan), Chris Glasel (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran),
Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory) and Ferrell all
singled in runs as well to put WLC up 7-6.
The Eagles scored four unanswered runs, but Wisconsin Lutheran
made a ninth inning rally with runs by Matt Lang (East Troy,
Wis./East Troy) and Essig. The Warriors comeback fell short as they
left the tying run on base.
Paczocha and Glasel each collected three hits in the loss.
The Warriors host Cardinal Stritch Monday in a non-conference
doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
