SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team split a pair of games with the Lakeland
College Muskies on Thursday afternoon, winning the first game 17-10
and losing the second, 9-5.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which begins a stretch of six games in the
next four days, came out swinging the first game by putting up 10
runs on the board in the first four innings.
The Muskies tried to get back in the game several times by
putting up four spots in the third and seventh inning, but the
Warriors answered every time. No one in the WLC lineup went hitless
as the Warriors pulled away late, winning 17-10.
The Lakeland pitching staff had trouble with the entire lineup.
Highlighting the offensive surge was Josh Ferrell (Cocoa,
Fla./Temple Christian) who went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three
RBIs, three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Also, AJ
Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove Christian) was 2-for-5 with two
doubles, two RBIs, a walk and three runs scored.
Reliever Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake Beach, Ill./Shoreland
Lutheran) earned the win and Josh Lemke (Brillion, Wis./Manitowoc
Lutheran) shut down the Muskies the rest of the way by hurling 2.2
innings, giving up one run on three hits, one strikeout without a
walk.
In game two, the Warriors could not jump out of the gate as
quickly as they did during the first game, finding themselves in an
early hole down 6-0.
WLC would not go down without a fight as Eric Burrow (Lake
Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) would sacrifice home a run in the
sixth inning. With two outs in the seventh inning and Matt Essig
(Lewiston, Minn./Luther) on first base by drawing a walk, Justin
Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) doubled to right field to
score Essig. Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory)
walked and Ferrell pulled Wisconsin Lutheran within one by hitting
a three-run home run over the left-center field fence.
Lakeland had the answer as they scored three runs of its own in
the bottom half of the seventh.
Freshman Austin Backhaus (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport)
took the loss. Reliever Cody Schmidt (Union City, Okla./Union City)
kept WLC in the game by throwing three shutout innings. Wisconsin
Lutheran played solid defense, going errorless for the first time
this season.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-10, 1-1 NAC) hosts Marian College on
Saturday in its first home game of the season. First pitch of the
doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Neumann Family Field.
