WATERTOWN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team split a NAC doubleheader with the Maranatha
Baptist Bible College Crusaders on Saturday at Washington Park.
After coming from behind to win the first game 8-5, the Warriors
couldn't do the same in the nightcap losing by a score of 8-6.
Wisconsin Lutheran jumped on the board with two runs in the
first inning and then added another in the second, but Maranatha
tied the game by scoring three in the third inning.
The Crusaders took a 5-3 advantage heading in the sixth inning
when the Warrior offense finally broke loose.
Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) got the inning
started with a single and Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake Beach,
Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) followed by slamming a game-tying, two-run
home run down the left field line. WLC was not finished as two more
runs were knocked home by Shawn Glasel (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley
Lutheran).
Glasel then scored on a single from his brother Chris Glasel
(Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran).
Ferrell went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Kyle Edlhuber
(Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory) had two hits with an RBI and a
run scored.
Cody Schmidt (Union City, Okla./Union City) was solid in his
last start of the year. He earned his second win, throwing a
complete game and giving up five runs (three earned), struck out
six and walked none.
In the second game, the Warriors found themselves down 4-1 going
into the sixth inning when they rallied for three runs to tie the
game.
After the Crusaders scored to go up by one, Thorsteins put the
Warriors ahead with a two-run home run, his second of the day.
Maranatha had the answer though, as they scored three runs of
their own in the bottom on the seventh to regain the lead.
Wisconsin Lutheran's rally fell short in the ninth inning as it
fell 8-6.
Ryan Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan) went 2-for-5 with two
RBIs and two runs scored and Jared Huntemann (Mukwonago,
Wis./Mukwonago) also went 2-for-5 and scored twice.
Wisconsin Lutheran finishes its 2008 season with an overall
record of 7-31 and 6-16 in the NAC.
