MILWAUKEE - The Edgewood College men's
basketball team shot 67.7 percent from the floor in the second half
and overcame a five-point halftime deficit to defeat Wisconsin
Lutheran College 88-84 on Saturday night at the Recreation
Complex.
In the midst of five first-half lead changes, Edgewood built its
largest of the game, 25-17, with 11:31 left in the first half. The
Warriors closed the half on a 14-6 run to take a 43-38 lead into
the locker room. Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and
Kyle Plath (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) finished with 11
and 10 points, respectively in the half.
Wisconsin Lutheran extended its lead to a game-high nine points
(55-46) with 15:45 left in the second half. The Eagles took their
first lead of the half, 62-61, at the 10:27 mark. Both team traded
leads a total of six times the rest of the way. After a Plath
three-pointer tied the game at 84-84 with 43 seconds to play,
Edgewood's Kent Faurote answered with a three of his own with 26
seconds left. The Warriors turned the ball over on their ensuring
possession and Faurote hit a free throw to seal the win.
WLC junior forward Sam Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley
Lutheran) led all scorers with 22 points. Madson finished with 14
points with Plath contributing 13. Jeremy Burmeister (Phoenix,
Ariz./Arizona Lutheran Academy) and Danny Behm (Jackson,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) added 12 and 10 points,
respectively.
The Warriors, who shot 24-for-27 from the free-throw line, shot
40.6 percent (26-for-64) from the floor for the game. Edgewood,
which out-rebounded WLC 46-33, shot 50.7 percent (37-for-73) for
the game.
Kent Faurote and Ben Wisniewski each scored 18 points to lead
five players in double figures for Edgewood (6-7, 4-1 NAC).
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-6, 2-2 NAC) travels to Manitowoc on Monday
for a non-conference game against Silver Lake College. Tip-off
between the Warriors and Lakers is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the
UW-Manitowoc Gymnasium.
