MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College
outgained Concordia University Wisconsin 262-75 in total offense,
but committed five turnovers en route to falling to the Falcons
13-0 in the second-annual Lutheran Bowl on a cold and rainy
Thursday evening at Raabe Stadium.
The Warriors dominated all major facets of the game, but were
unable to find the end zone on a night where harsh weather
conditions made offense hard to come by for both teams.
Cornerback Justin Rogers put Concordia Wisconsin in front 7-0
when he intercepted a Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) pass
and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown with 8:31 left in the
opening quarter. CUW held a 7-0 lead through one quarter of
action.
The Falcons increased their lead to 10-0 with 12 seconds gone by
in the second quarter on a 36-yard field goal by Dan Winsey. CUW
started its scoring drive on the Warriors 27-yard line after
recovering a Shaw fumble.
WLC moved the football deep into CUW territory two times later
in the quarter, but was unable to find the end zone as the Falcons
held a 10-0 halftime advantage.
Neither team was able to generate any scoring in the third
quarter. WLC twice moved the football inside the Concordia
Wisconsin 30-yard line, but had both drives halted. The Falcons
blocked a Philip Chaltis (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) 36-yard field
goal attempt and returned it all the way to WLC's 22-yard line to
set up their final score of the game.
Winsey connected on his second field goal of the game, this one
from 24 yards away, with 13:33 left in the fourth quarter as the
rivals from Mequon built a 13-0 lead. CUW scored 10 of its 13
points off of Warriors' turnovers.
WLC, which ran 30 more offensive plays than the Falcons,
finished the game with 272 yards of total offense, while holding
CUW to just 75 yards. The Warriors limited Concordia Wisconsin to
just four first downs, which included 1-for-12 on third-down
conversions. Conversely, Wisconsin Lutheran went 10-for-18 on
third-down plays.
Running back Jesse Muldrow (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
gained a game-high 85 yards on the ground, while junior Larry Hairl
(Chicago, Ill./Clemente) added 72.
Defensively, Justin Cromas (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) and
Josh McCormick (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) each recorded
team highs of six tackles. WLC forced three turnovers and recorded
three sacks on the night.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-4, 2-2 NAC) hosts Aurora University in
another NAC showdown next Saturday, October 31 on Parents' Day at
Raabe Stadium. Kickoff between the Warriors and Spartans is
scheduled for 1 p.m.
