WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University
Pioneers outscored Wisconsin Lutheran College 54-22 in points
inside the paint en route to defeating the Warriors 100-83 on
Saturday evening in the Wisconsin Classic at Van Male
Fieldhouse.
The Warriors, who held their largest lead of three points early
on in the first half, exchanged leads with the host Pioneers four
times during the first eight minutes of the first half. With WLC
leading 13-10 at the 13:53 mark, Carroll went on a 15-1 run to take
the lead for good. The host Pioneers led by as many as 18 points in
the opening half before carrying a 47-37 leading into halftime. WLC
was out-scored 34-12 by the Pioneers in points inside the paint in
the first half.
Wisconsin Lutheran was able to trim its deficit down to seven
points (71-64) with 9:28 left in the second half before the
Pioneers built their lead back up to 17 points two different times
through the remainder of the game.
Seniors Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Ben
Ziesemer (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) tied for
game-high honors by scoring 24 points each for the Warriors, who
made 11 three-point field goals in the contest. Senior Sam Siemers
(Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) added 15 points.
WLC finished the game shooting 45.2 percent from the floor,
compared to 54.2 percent for CU. The Warriors committed 11
turnovers and were out-rebounded 39-33.
Paul Grosshuesch scored 24 points to lead three players who
tallied at least 20 points for the Pioneers (2-1). John Hoch added
a double-double with 21 points and 10 assists.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-3) rounds out play in the Wisconsin
Classic tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when it faces Carthage College
(3-1), which defeated Concordia University Wisconsin 85-60 in the
first game on Saturday.
