MILWAUKEE - Kyle Madson
(Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) scored a career-high 26 points to
lead five players in double figures as the Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's basketball team captured its first win of the season
by defeating the Aurora Spartans 100-93 in the Northern Athletics
Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday night at the Recreation
Complex.
The two South Division rivals exchanged leads throughout the
first eight minutes of the first half. A lay-up at 12:04 by senior
Shawn Glasel (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) gave the Warriors
a lead (21-20) they did not relinquish until late in the second
half. WLC led by as many as 14 points before heading into the
locker room with a 49-42 lead.
Senior Ben Ziesemer (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran)
was 4-for-6 from three-point range and scored 12 of his 15 points
in the first half for the Warriors, who shot 51.6 percent from the
field. Anthony Boykins scored nine of his 10 points in the first
half for Aurora, which shot 52.9 percent in the opening half.
Wisconsin Lutheran held its halftime lead for most of the second
half, but never led by more than eight points. Aurora went ahead
with 6:07 left and the teams exchanged leads until the Spartans
took an 85-82 advantage with 4:38 left on the clock. Ziesemer
responded by nailing a game-tying three-pointer with 4:17
remaining. Madson drove the lane for a lay-up and hit a
three-pointer on the following two possessions which sealed the
victory for the Warriors.
Madson paced WLC with a career-best 26 points and six rebounds.
Senior Sam Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran)
recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and grabbing 10
rebounds. He was also 12-for-13 from the free-throw line. Senior
Jeremy Burmeister (Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) also added a
career-high 22 points. Freshman Kaleb Buch (Manitowoc,
Wis./Lutheran) led Wisconsin Lutheran off the bench with 10
points.
WLC dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Spartans by a total
of 40-27. The Warriors also took advantage of their opportunities
at the free-throw line, as they were 22-for-25 in the second half
and 34-for-41 from the charity stripe for the game. Aurora went 11
of 18 from the line.
Lance Robinson scored 20 points to pace four players in double
figures for Spartans (1-5, 0-1 NAC).
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-4, 1-0 NAC) will go for two in a row when
it travels across town to face Cardinal Stritch University in a
non-conference game on Thursday at 7 p.m.
