MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team made 30 of its 34 free-throw attempts en
route to collecting a 76-65 Northern Athletics Conference victory
over the Rockford College Regents on Saturday at the Recreation
Complex.
The Warriors jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and never trailed in
the first half. WLC led by a half-high seven points two different
times before the Regents knotted the score at 31-31 at halftime for
one of four ties in the opening half. The Warriors, who shot 36.7
percent from the floor, had eight different players reach the
scoring column in the first half.
Both teams exchanged four leads changes and two ties during the
first six-plus minutes of the second half. After a technical foul
was called on Rockford, freshman guard Kaleb Buch (Manitowoc,
Wis./Lutheran) hit a pair of free throws and followed with a
three-pointer on the team's next possession as the Warriors grabbed
a 45-40 lead with 13:39 left and never looked back. WLC built its
lead up to a game-high 13 points before winning by 11.
Seniors Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Sam
Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) scored 14
points apiece to pace the Warriors. Sophomore Alex Merbach
(Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) contributed with 11 points and
a game-high nine rebounds.
WLC concluded the evening with a 39.6 percent performance from
the floor, while Rockford shot 42.9 percent. The Warriors, who
out-rebounded the Regents 42-32, were 30-for-34 from the charity
stripe. Wisconsin Lutheran was plagued by a season-high 25
turnovers which led to 27 points for the visiting Regents.
Robert Malone scored a game-high 25 points for the Regents (5-3,
2-2 NAC), who were 1-for-14 from three-point range and 10-for-20
from the free-throw line. Danny Armelin added 15 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-5, 3-0 NAC) will be back in action a week
from today when it travels to fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point on
Saturday, December 19 for a 7 p.m. non-conference tip-off with the
Pointers.
