ORLANDO, Fla. - The WLC baseball team recorded
its first win of the 2009 season with a 3-0 victory over Newbury
College in the second day of the RussMatt Central Florida
Invitational at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
The game was scoreless through the first four innings until the
Warriors scored in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Cody Schmidt
(Union City, Okla./Union City) RBI groundout that drove in John
Bodnar (Racine, Wis./Park).
After Newbury was unable to respond with a run of its own,
Wisconsin Lutheran scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) scored on an error and Josh
Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) scored on a Brad Marshall
(Cudahy, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) fielder's choice.
Newbury was able to get two hits in the top of the seventh but
was still unable to get a runner across the plate and the Warriors
recorded the win.
Lang, Ferrell and Bodnar each recorded one hit for the Warriors,
while Marshall and Schmidt each tallied an RBI.
Senior Josh Lemke (Brillion, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) pitched a
complete-game shutout for the WLC. Lemke allowed five hits, one
walk and five strikeouts in his first outing of the season.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-2) plays the second game of its
doubleheader against Newbury on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
