MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran put an end to
its losing streak by defeating Maranatha Baptist Bible College 18-0
in seven innings on Saturday in the first game of a Northern
Athletics Conference baseball doubleheader at Neumann Family
Field.
WLC began its scoring surge in the bottom of the first when it
plated two runs on a pair of hits. Senior DH Cody Schmidt (Union
City, Okla./Union City) and sophomore second baseman Justin
Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) each scored runs in the
inning for the Warriors.
After a scoreless second, WLC came back in the third to plate
five runs, the first of three five-spots that the Warriors put up
in the game. Sophomore catcher Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple
Christian) and senior AJ Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove
Christian) each recorded two-RBI singles in the frame.
The Warriors managed to score a run in the fourth before scoring
five more runs in both the fifth and sixth inning. The game ended
after the top half of the seventh due to run rule.
Barkhurst and Ryan Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan) each went
3-for-4 in the game for WLC, which saw eight different players
tallied at least an RBI in the game. Barkhurst led the way with
five RBIs.
Senior Josh Lemke (Brillion, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) notched
his second win of the season by tossing seven shutout innings. He
allowed only six hits, while striking out 10 without walking a
single batter.
Andrew Solarek went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Maranatha
(3-12, 0-7 NAC).
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-18, 1-8 NAC) battles the Crusaders in the
second game of a NAC doubleheader on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Neumann
Family Field.
