MILWAUKEE - The University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers defeated the Wisconsin Lutheran
College Warriors 16-2 on Wednesday in a non-conference baseball
game at Henry Aaron Field.
The Panthers, a member of the Horizon League boasting the
state's lone NCAA Division I baseball program, jumped on sophomore
starting pitcher Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) early.
Milwaukee plated four runs in the first and two more in the second
for a 6-0 lead. After John Lynch (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) allowed
three runs in the third, Wisconsin Lutheran held UWM scoreless for
the next two innings.
Trailing 9-0 and hitless through five, WLC scored two runs and
saw four players reach base in the sixth inning. Junior Kyle
Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory) singled home senior
AJ Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove Christian) for the Warriors'
first run of the game. Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian)
followed with an RBI double that scored Jared Huntemann (Mukwonago,
Wis./Mukwonago) for the final tally.
UWM responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the
sixth and added five more in the seventh for what would prove to be
the final runs of the contest. Seven Panthers hurlers combined to
three-hit WLC.
Edlhuber went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Warriors. Lang,
who was one of six pitchers to take the mound in the game, took the
loss. John Bodnar (Racine, Wis./Park) fanned two of the three
batters he faced in the eighth.
Paul Hoenecke went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored
to pace the Panthers (13-18), who finished with 19 hits in the
game.
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-19, 2-8 NAC) returns to conference action
on Saturday when it travels across town to take on the MSOE
Raiders. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for noon at
Henry Aaron Field.
