MILWAUKEE - A walk-off sacrifice fly in the
bottom of the ninth inning was all that MSOE needed to top
Wisconsin Lutheran College 7-6 in the first game of a Northern
Athletics Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at
Henry Aaron Field.
The Warriors started the game with a one-run first inning on a
Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory) RBI single that
scored senior Jared Huntemann (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago).
WLC added another run in the second inning when sophomore Ethan
Geis (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) scored on a Cody
Schmidt (Union City, Okla./Union City) RBI single. The Raiders were
once again shut out in the bottom of the inning and the Warriors
had the 2-0 lead after two.
MSOE was able to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning,
scoring a pair of runs after WLC was held scoreless in the top of
the frame. With the game tied at 2-2, the Raiders scored three runs
on three hits to take a 5-2 lead into the fifth inning.
The Warriors added a run in the top of the fifth on a Justin
Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) sacrifice to score
Huntemann for the second time in the game. MSOE added another run
in the bottom of the seventh to go up 6-3.
Trailing by three runs, the Warriors benefited from an error by
the Raiders' third baseman that plated two runs. With the game at
6-5, Schmidt scored AJ Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove
Christian) on a sac fly to right field. The Warriors held the
Raiders scoreless in the bottom of the inning and the game was tied
at 6-6 going into the final inning of play.
MSOE allowed only one hit and kept WLC off the scoreboard in the
ninth to keep the game tied heading into the bottom of the inning.
With one out and the bases loaded, the Raiders' Michael Merk hit a
sac fly to bring in the winning run as MSOE pulled out the 7-6 win
in dramatic fashion.
Barkhurst, Geis and Huntemann each finished with two hits apiece
in the game for the Warriors. Senior Josh Lemke (Brillion,
Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) pitched a complete game for Wisconsin
Lutheran, giving up 11 hits and striking out four.
The Warriors (5-20, 2-9 NAC) will face off with the Raiders in
the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Henry
Aaron Field.
