Stars' eighth-inning surge sinks Warriors

Box Score Box score

MILWAUKEE - The Dominican University Stars scored 12 runs in the eighth inning to overcome a 5-4 deficit and defeat the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors 16-7 on Sunday in the first game of a Northern Athletics Conference baseball doubleheader at a cold and rainy Neumann Family Field.

The Stars grabbed a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single only to see WLC come back in the bottom half of the frame and tie the game at 1-1. An AJ Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove Christian) single plated Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory).

WLC went in front 2-1 in the third on an RBI groundout from sophomore Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) that scored Cody Schmidt (Union City, Okla./Union City). Dominican took the lead back 3-2 in the fourth when it scored a pair of runs on two hits.

The Warriors knotted the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning on an RBI sac fly from Paczocha that scored Ethan Geis (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran). After the Stars regained a 4-3 advantage in the fifth, WLC scored twice in the sixth on RBIs from Eric Burrow (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Jared Huntemann (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago).

Holding onto a 5-4 lead entering the eighth, the Warriors surrendered 12 runs on eight hits and suddenly saw themselves trailing 16-5. WLC plated two runs in its half of the eighth, but it wasn't enough.

Edlhuber went 3-for-5 and scored two runs to lead the Warriors. Schmidt went 7.1 innings and took the loss on the hill.

Kevin Cahill went 5-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Stars (13-16, 6-7 NAC).

Steady rain forced the postponement on Sunday's second game. A make-up date has not yet been set at this time.

Wisconsin Lutheran (6-21, 3-10 NAC) travels to Waukesha, Wis., for a non-conference doubleheader against the Carroll University Pioneers on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Waukesha West High School.
