LISLE, Ill. - Senior Cody Schmidt (Union City,
Okla./Union City) allowed only two runs over nine innings and
junior Ryan Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan) belted a three-run
ninth-inning home run to boost Wisconsin Lutheran College past
Benedictine University 3-2 in the first game of a Northern
Athletics Conference doubleheader on Sunday at the Village of
Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.
Wisconsin Lutheran and BU played five innings before either team
could manage to send a run across the plate. The Eagles grabbed a
1-0 lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Kevin Graham. Benedictine
went ahead 2-0 in the seventh on another RBI double off the bat of
Matthew Brewer.
After a scoreless frame in the eighth, the Warriors had one
final chance to pull off the upset over the conference's preseason
favorite. Sophomore Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) led
off the ninth with a single and later advanced to second on a
passed ball. Benedictine retired the next two batters before senior
AJ Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove Christian) reached on an
error. Pollesch followed with a three-run shot to give WLC a 3-2
lead.
Despite a one-out double by Rick Porcaro in the bottom of the
ninth, the Warriors kept the Eagles off the scoreboard and held on
for the win.
Schmidt, Ferrell and junior Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago,
Wis./Luther Preparatory) each had two hits in the game for WLC.
Schmidt, who tossed his first complete game of the season, gave up
eight hits and just two runs while striking out a pair and walking
two.
Kevin Graham and Matthew Brewer had two hits apiece for
Benedictine (14-17, 8-7 NAC). Kip Simmerman was charged with the
loss after allowing all three runs in two-thirds of an inning of
work.
Wisconsin Lutheran (8-21, 5-10 NAC) will try for the sweep over
Benedictine when the two teams meet in the second game of the
doubleheader at 5 p.m. at The Sports Complex.
